Camp Muskoka Community
Over the years I have interviewed hundreds of campers, their families and staff, asking “What is it about Camp Muskoka that keeps you coming back?” Over and over again I have been told “It is the sense of community, being accepted for being me, not being judged, belonging to a place where I am free to be myself, and a place where I belong.”
As a Camp Director, I have the best job in the world. I get to be part of these experiences. It is humbling to know that Camp Muskoka has meant so much to so many. The community of Camp Muskoka is an incredible place. It is created by using a very simple formula :
Community Living is a key component to the success of the Camp Muskoka experience. We achieve this sense of community through our simple, yet comprehensive set of expectations for all who share our environment.
Fun is the first rule of Camp Muskoka. We strive to ensure all campers have fun at all times.
Respect is another key value that we promote. We encourage our campers to be respectful to themselves, each other, the property and the environment. To put it quite simply, “Treat others the way you like to be treated.”
Honesty is fundamental. We teach our campers the value of honesty by acknowledging that it is not only okay, but it is normal to make mistakes. It is what we do about our mistakes that is important. By being honest with ourselves and those around us, we not only learn from our mistakes but also allow others to learn as well.
Accountability is key to being part of a community. Being responsible for our own words and actions ensures that we have a positive affect on the Camp Muskoka community while building a safe, enjoyable living environment for everyone.
It is through these values that we strive to foster a community with Integrity, where everyone can have fun, feel safe and be accepted for who they are.
Whether you are the newest member of the Camp Muskoka Family, or whether you have been coming to Camp Muskoka for years, we all share the responsibilities, joys and benefits of the Camp Muskoka Community.
