A Day in the Life

Description:  Introduce students to diversity of living things and the interrelationships among living things. Students will perform the movement skills required to participate in outdoor pursuits alone and with others. Students will also participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness and transfer appropriate interpersonal skills to new physical activities. Students will learn about a variety of ecosystems and interactions throughout our mixed forested property during discussions, games and activities.

Airplane Crash Scenario

Description:  Students will participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness. Students will apply living skill such as; goal setting, conflict-resolution techniques, and interpersonal skills that contribute to positive group interaction, to physical activities and outdoor pursuits. Students will follow safety procedures related to physical activity, equipment, and facilities. Survival Fire Building and Survival Shelter Building are pre-requisite lessons for this activity.

Aquatic Studies

Description:  Introduce students to diversity of living things and the interrelationships among living things. Compare the characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates. Identify various kinds of plant or animal organisms in a given plot using classification keys. Describe specific characteristics or adaptations that enable each group of vertebrates to live in its particular habitat (e.g., fish in water), and explain the importance of maintaining that habitat for the survival of the species.

Coureur du Bois

Description:  Students will identify and compare the ways in which people in various early civilizations met their physical and social needs, including how they interacted with the natural environment. Students will use a variety of resources and tools to investigate characteristics of a number of early civilizations, including their significant innovations and technological advantages. Students will show how innovations made by various early civilizations have influenced the modern world. This role playing games incorporates the concept of bartering as a form of commerce shared among many peoples throughout history.

Ecological Game

Description:  Students will perform the movement skills required to participate in outdoor pursuits alone and with others. Students will also participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness and transfer appropriate interpersonal skills to new physical activities. Specific activities can include camouflage games, tree identification games, scavenger hunts, sensory games, adaptation games and environmental games. Forest activities are designed to promote a greater comfort, awareness and appreciation for the natural world.

Forest Ecology Hike

Description:  Students will perform the movement skills required to participate in outdoor pursuits alone and with others. Students will also participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness and transfer appropriate interpersonal skills to new physical activities. Introduce students to diversity of living things and the interrelationships among living things. The interpretive experience includes activities ranging from a salamander hunt, stump studies, flora and fauna identification, forest games, tracking, discussion about habitat, ecosystems and interconnections within our forests.

Geology Rocks

Description:  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the composition of the earth’s crust, and describe how changes in the earth’s crust result from both internal and external processes. Students will investigate the formation of the physical features of the earth’s crust and identify the factors that must be considered in making informed decisions about land use and explain their importance (e.g., environmental impact; properties of soil).

Description:  Students will identify ways in which the natural environment shaped the culture and traditions of early Inuit people. Students will identify physical and social needs of early Inuit people and compare the ways in which these needs are met. Students will perform the movement skills required to participate in games and outdoor pursuits alone and with others; locomotion and traveling, manipulation, and stability. Students will participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness. Students will identify the components of physical fitness and describe physical activities that improve these components.

Land Sports

Description:  Students will participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness. Students will follow safety procedures related to physical  activity, equipment, and facilities. Students will have an opportunity to participate in archery, beach volleyball, soccer, ultimate frisbee and a variety of other tradition field sports.

Night Hike

Description:  Students will perform the movement skills required to participate in outdoor pursuits alone and with others. Students will be introduced to a diversity of living things and the interrelationships among living things. Night activities are designed as sensory experiences that promote comfort, appreciation and awareness of the darker hours of the day. Night activities include sensory games, wildlife calls, astronomy and other night sky phenomenon.

Orienteering

Description:  Students will participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness. Students will follow safety procedures related to physical activity, equipment, and facilities. Orienteering activities include compass use and terminology, land marking, map reading and using bearings and mapping.

Students will have an opportunity to choose their own level of commitment from varying heights on our natural rock faces.

Description:  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the importance of energy in relation to the wise use of renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Students will design and construct devices that use a form of energy to meet a specific need or want, and investigate how the energy is transferred to a specific output. Students will evaluate the reasons for conserving natural resources and identify possible ways of conserving energy.

Survival Shelter Building

Whimsical Weather

Description:  Demonstrate an understanding of the major climatic factors and patterns associated with weather. Investigate the major climatic factors associated with weather, and design, construct, and test a variety of instruments for recording various features of the weather. Students will study various forms of precipitation, air currents, cloud formations, temperature fluctuation and alternative energies.
